Milwaukee Club
706 N. Jefferson St.
Looking back across Wisconsin Avenue to the north, you can see the final two stops on our East Town Tour: the Milwaukee Club (the red colored building on the east side of Jefferson) and The Pfister Hotel (on the west side of Jefferson). Cross back across Wisconsin Avenue to the Milwaukee Club.
Founded in 1882, the Milwaukee Club is the oldest and most exclusive private social club in Milwaukee. In fact, it was the first men’s club west of the Allegheny Mountains. Early members were a "who's who" of Milwaukee commerce and industry, including Layton, Plankinton, Allis, Bradley, Pfister, Wells, and Pabst. Original membership cost $100, with $50 annual dues. Today, the Milwaukee Club remains a private, members-only business and social establishment.
Completed in 1883, the building itself is designed in the Queen Anne style. Most attribute its design to architect Edward Townsend Mix. However, there is some confusion here. The final two proposals under consideration by Milwaukee Club included proposals from Mix as well as from famed Chicago-based architect Daniel Burnham of Burnham & Root. Research seems to indicate that Daniel Burnham designed the building, while Mix was hired as the local supervisor of construction.
When completed viewing the Milwaukee Club, cross Jefferson Street to The Pfister Hotel.
