Nashville’s strategic location on the Cumberland River made the city a valuable asset to both the Union and Confederate Armies during the Civil War. Following the surrender to the Union Army on February 25, 1862, Nashville became a fortified stronghold. Built by the North, Fort Negley became the largest inland stone fortification constructed during the Civil War.

Today, Fort Negley Visitors Center and Park is a historical education and outdoor recreation center. The park is open year-round from dawn to dusk for self-guided walking tours of the approximately four acre reconstructed site. Site maps are available in the mailbox posted behind the stone gates. The Visitor Center itself offers interactive touch screen exhibits and informative videos.

Fort Negley is located approximately 2 miles south of downtown Nashville. Admission is FREE.
