Potter Palmer Row Homes

1316 - 1322 North Astor Street

Just north of the John Wellborn Root home, on the same side of the street, you'll find three Romanesque Revival row homes at #1316 - #1322. These beautiful homes were built in the late 1880's for Potter Palmer, famed retailer and real estate mogul.

As mentioned in this tour's introduction, Potter Palmer bought much of the land in the area and built a mansion (which is now demolished). The area was transformed from marshland and cemeteries as many other wealthy Chicagoans followed Potter's lead and moved north from Chicago's near south side.

Potter Palmer was a master salesman. He made his fortune in the world of retailing, eventually selling his shop to Marshall Field. He was largely responsible for developing Chicago's State Street commercial district, and owned the Palmer House hotel.
