Astor Court
1355 North Astor
Cross Banks Street, and on the east side of Astor, you'll find Astor Court at #1355. This formal Georgian structure was designed by Howard Van Doren Shaw in 1914 for William and Erna Goodman.
In 1922, the Goodman's made a gift of $250,000 to the Art Institute of Chicago to establish a theater. The gift was in memory of their son, Kenneth, an aspiring playwright, who died at the age of 35 in the influenza epidemic of 1918. The Goodman Theater opened its doors in 1925, and three of Kenneth's one-act plays were presented at the theater's dedication. Today, the Goodman is an internationally recognized, Tony Award winning theater.
Today, Astor Court is home to multiple private residences. Be sure to peek through the side-entry gateway to see a beautiful inner courtyard.
