1 South State Street
Louis H. Sullivan, architect

Walk one block south on State Street to the intersection of State and Madison. On the southeast corner sits Sullivan Center.

Completed in 1902 for retailers Schlesinger & Mayer and later sold to Carson Pirie Scott & Co., this highly ornamental building was renowned architect Louis Sullivan’s last significant project in Chicago.  Be sure to check out the building’s intricate ornamentation, particularly surrounding the corner entryway on State and Madison. Unlike the Marshall Field & Co. building, the interior space of this building is not particularly noteworthy. The building, now called The Sullivan Center, is currently a mixed use building with Target -- a retailer -- occupying the first two floors.

SIDE TRIP! If you're up for a little something extra, take a side trip to Wabash Avenue, which is located one block east of State Street. In the Loop, Wabash Avenue is located under the CTA's elevated train tracks. The elevated tracks give the area underneath a more urban, gritty feel, and they've served as backdrop in numerous movies and TV shows. On Wabash you'll find restaurants, offices, and shops, including Chicago's famous "Jewelers Row". Jewelers Row runs from Washington to Adams, with many jewelry shops and "malls". Step into one of the malls to see merchants behind their glass counters selling fine jewelry of all types. This is the place to go if you're looking for fine jewelry at a fraction of department store prices!

If you need anything camera or photography related, head to Central Camera Company (at 230 S. Wabash). Central Camera has been owned and operated by the same family since 1899! They offer everything a photographer needs from cameras and lenses to memory cards and darkroom equipment. The staff is extremely helpful and knowledgable.

If you'd like to grab some food and drink before continuing the tour, Wabash Avenue is home to Miller's Pub (at 134 S. Wabash), a truly historic Chicago restaurant serving great food at affordable prices since 1935.

If you've taken the Side Trip to Wabash Avenue, head back to State and Madison to continue our tour.
