You don't have to walk far for our next stop. Located just south of the Marshall Field’s building on the southwest corner of State and Washington is the Reliance Building -- now a hotel called Staypineapple Chicago.
Completed in 1895, this 14 story building with a facade of glass and white terra cotta, was designed by the architectural firm of Burnham & Root. John Wellborn Root designed the early stages, with Charles B. Atwood completing the work after John Root’s sudden death.
The building is considered the world's first steel and glass skyscraper, and the forefather of the modern 20th century skyscraper. Its skeletal steel frame construction bears the weight of the building, giving it a delicate feeling and allowing the walls to be constructed with large windows -- perfect for letting natural light into the building's offices. Additionally, the speed in which this building was constructed highlighted the economic efficiencies of utilizing the new steel frame construction method.
