Competed in 1969, this 1,128 foot tall, 100 story building is a Chicago icon. Formerly known as the John Hancock Center, the building is now simply called 875 N. Michigan Avenue.
The building's unique X-bracing allows it to resist high winds and also reduces the need for internal columns, which allows for more interior floor space. The design was ground-breaking at the time, and paved the way for skyscrapers of previously unimagined heights.
Currently 875 N. Michigan Avenue is Chicago’s fifth tallest structure. It is a mixed-use building, with retail space at the base, offices on the lower levels and condominiums on the top floors. Don't miss the observatory on the 94th floor for outstanding views of the city.
If you're getting hungry and looking for a great, 24-hour, family-friendly diner, head a couple of blocks west on Chestnut Street to Tempo Cafe (6 E. Chestnut, at the corner of State and Chestnut.) Tempo Cafe is family owned and operated, and has been serving Chicagoans and visitors alike for over 30 years!
