At the north end of North Michigan Avenue is Oak Street beach, a great example of what makes Chicago such a livable city. The soft sand beach is a favorite hang-out for the folks in the neighborhood, with sunbathing the prime activity. There is also beach volleyball and a full-service beach-side restaurant in the summer. In the winter, the calm and solitude of the lakefront is a stark contrast to the hectic pace of the city.
