Cloud Gate (aka "The Bean")
Millennium Park
Audio Tour
Take the stairs on either side of McCormick-Tribune Plaza to Grainger Plaza -- located just above the restaurant. Once there, head towards Cloud Gate.
Unveiled in 2006 and affectionately called “The Bean” by locals, Anish Kapoor’s Cloud Gate is one of the most popular -- and most often photographed -- landmarks in Chicago. The structure is composed of 168 precisely cut stainless-steel plates, pieced together like a puzzle, welded shut, then polished. Cloud Gate is enormous, standing 33 feet high, 42 feet wide, 66 feet long, and weighing 110 tons!
The highly polished work playfully reflects Chicago’s wonderful skyline and the park’s surroundings. If you have the opportunity, be sure to walk underneath the sculpture and look up for another fascinating view!
