For those who want a relaxing nature walk in the heart of the city, head to Northerly Island. Constructed for the Chicago World's Fair, this man-made “island” was meant to be the northern most island of a chain of islands heading south (never built), hence the name Northerly Island.

Northerly Island was recently re-landscaped with rolling hills and a pond, making it a true oasis. This area was once the site of Meigs Field, an airport for small private planes, which Mayor Richard M. Daley famously bulldozed in the middle of the night to make way for more public park land. The permanent building which serves as the park's field house / welcome center was once the passenger terminal!

The surrounding area is now a serene spot with wild prairie grasses and great views of the city.

The north end of Northerly Island is home to Huntington Bank Pavilion, an outdoor amphitheater which hosts concerts and events during the warm weather months.

In the winter, the area is home to several winter events, including Polar Days.
