Brewers Hill (Optional)
Riverwalk, Pleasant to Holton Streets.
As you cross Pleasant Street, the RiverWalk takes on a very residential feel, with smartly designed townhomes, condominiums and apartments along the river front. The large hill to the left is called Brewers Hill, named after the beer barons that lived here during the heyday of Milwaukee's beer industry. You'll still find many old Victorian homes in the Brewers Hill neighborhood.
The area below the hill (where you are standing) is called the Beerline "B" area, named after the rail line that once ran along this industrial corridor serving the Schlitz, Pabst and Blatz breweries. Stroll north at your leisure to the Holton Street Bridge.
At the base of the bridge you'll see Lakefront Brewery, an award-winning brewery with a European-inspired beer hall, delicious American comfort food and an entertaining brewery tour. If you're getting tired, this is a great spot to take a break.
This is the northern most point on the tour. Retrace your steps back along the RiverWalk until your reach Juneau Avenue.
For the real adventurers, you can take the pedestrian walkway which hangs underneath the Holton Street Bridge to the other side of the river. To access the hanging walkway, you'll find not-very-obvious stairs across from the main entrance to Lakefront Brewery. Once on the other side of the river, you can follow Holton Street about one block to Brady Street, a fun Milwaukee neighborhood with an eclectic, bohemian vibe. There are plenty of bars, restaurants, boutiques and coffee shops as you head east on Brady. If you go far enough east, you hit a walkway that takes you down to Lake Michigan! (When you hit the 5-corner intersection with Farwell, bear to the right to continue along Brady Street to the lake.) If you've gone this far, you'll find yourself in Veterans Park on the lake...so give up on this RiverWalk Self-Guided Walking Tour and jump to our Lakefront Self-Guided Walking Tour!
